Your questions answered

Can bird food go bad?

Yes, bird food can turn bad if it is not stored in the correct way, or is exposed to excessive moisture, which can lead to a buildup of mould and bacteria on the food. It should therefore be stored in a cool, dry place which will help to keep it fresher for longer. Make sure to store your bird food in tightly sealed, chew-proof containers, to eliminate any risk of unwanted pests and rodents infesting your supplies.

Can bird food expire?

Yes bird food can expire. It is generally suggested using bird seed within a few months to a year, as the seed can become stale and lose their nutritional value. Suet-based products may have a shorter shelf life, especially when not stored correctly as the fat can turn rancid, particularly in warm temperatures.

Does bird food attract mice?

Yes. Bird food that's left on the floor with attract mice. This can be prevented by using a feeder with a suitable tray to stop the bird food from landing on the ground.

Can bird seed get wet?

Yes, bird food that's wet for a short time is fine for birds to eat. However, if it's not eaten within a few days the seeds might start to germinate (sprout). Throw away any sprouting or mouldy seed and clean the feeder before refilling.
