Your questions answered

The Suet Cake Basket, Silhouette Suet Cake Feeder, Premium Suet Feeder, Single Suet Feeder and Nuttery feeders all hold a standard suet cake securely, so birds peck at it without carrying it off.

Suet is a good high-energy food for birds. In warm weather it softens and spoils more quickly, so put out only what birds will finish in a day or two and remove any that looks soft or mouldy.

Hang it near cover, such as a shrub or tree, about two metres from dense bushes where cats could hide. A shady spot keeps suet firmer in milder weather.

Clean your feeders once a week. Tip out old food, wash every part in hot soapy water or a bird-safe disinfectant, then rinse and let it dry before refilling. Weekly cleaning helps stop the spread of trichomonosis, a disease that passes quickly between finches at shared feeders. Scrape out any old suet before washing.
