Only ever offer peanuts in a steel-mesh peanut feeder, never loose, so birds can’t carry whole nuts back to their chicks. Feed peanuts from 1 November to 30 April.

Buy peanuts tested for aflatoxins, a natural toxin found in mouldy nuts, and throw away any that are damp or mouldy. Clean your feeders once a week. Tip out old food, wash every part in hot soapy water or a bird-safe disinfectant, then rinse and let it dry before refilling. Weekly cleaning helps stop the spread of trichomonosis, a disease that passes quickly between finches at shared feeders.
