Living with Birds Wooden Nest Boxes for Birds Nest Box

Wooden Nest Boxes for Birds

What else measures up to the warmth and natural appeal of real wood? Our wooden nest boxes provide quality accommodation that’s valued by birds for nesting and year-round roosting.

They’re built to last from chunky, quality timber – unlike thin, flimsy wooden boxes that rot after a couple of seasons. You don’t even need to reach for the paint brush: they’ll keep their natural good looks for years, ageing gracefully without the need for varnish or preservatives.

Your questions answered

What types of birds are attracted to wooden nest boxes?

Wooden nest boxes can attract a variety of bird species, including sparrows, blue tits, robins, and wrens. The size of the entrance hole and the location of the box will influence which birds use it. Choose 26mm for blue tits and 32mm for everything else.

How should I maintain my wooden bird nest box?

Clean your nest box annually, ideally after the breeding season in autumn. Remove old nesting materials and wash the box with mild soap and water to prevent disease.

Where is the best place to install a wooden bird nest box?

Place your nest box in a sheltered spot, ideally 2-4 meters above the ground and facing away from direct sunlight, strong winds, and predators. Avoid facing it toward the sun in the hottest parts of the day (south-facing).

Can I paint or stain a wooden nest box?

It is best to leave the wood untreated or use water-based, non-toxic paints or stains to preserve the natural appeal for birds.

Should I include nesting material inside the box?

It’s not necessary to place nesting material inside the box. Birds will naturally gather their own materials. However, providing nearby resources like twigs, horse hair and sheep wool can encourage nesting.
