Your questions answered

The Suet Ball Basket, Premium Suet Feeder, Bird Lovers™ Suet Ball Feeder and Nuttery feeders all hold fat balls securely in a cage. Pick the size and style that suits your garden. Always take fat balls out of any plastic netting first, because birds’ feet can get caught in it.

Suet is a good high-energy food for birds. In warm weather it softens and spoils more quickly, so put out only what birds will finish in a day or two and remove any that looks soft or mouldy.

Tits, starlings, sparrows, woodpeckers and nuthatches all take suet, and long-tailed tits are frequent visitors to fat ball feeders.

Clean your feeders once a week. Tip out old food, wash every part in hot soapy water or a bird-safe disinfectant, then rinse and let it dry before refilling. Weekly cleaning helps stop the spread of trichomonosis, a disease that passes quickly between finches at shared feeders. Throw away any fat ball that’s gone soft, mouldy or rancid.
