Living with Birds Suet Balls for Birds

Suet Balls for Birds

The nutritional challenges are the same for time-pressed birds of every feather. Getting enough to eat is easier when food is readily accessible and packs maximum energy into every beakful. That’s where suet stands supreme, offering more calories per kilo than seeds or insects.

It’s also highly adaptable, lending itself to a wide range of easy to handle options from suet cakes to suet balls and suet pellets.

Your questions answered

Does bird food expire?

Yes - bird food does expire. However, there are a number of ways that you can keep it fresh for as long as possible. Firstly, the type of food plays a role: Seeds last longer than suet or nectar due to their lower moisture content. Secondly, make sure that you are storing the food correctly: it should be in an airtight container, in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Exposure to moisture can cause mould and harmful bacteria to grow, which can have negative effects on the health of birds. Overall, correct storage, good hygiene, and the type of food used are all factors that affect how quickly bird food expires.

Does bird food attract rats?

Unfortunately, bird food does attract rats. In particular, spilled food around bird feeders or food placed on the ground give rats easy access. Therefore, it is recommended that you regularly clean underneath your bird feeders, or use a tray to collect all of the discarded seed. Furthermore, providing food above ground level will prevent rats from being able to access the feeder easily. Rats are also less attracted to foods such as Niger or Safflower Seeds, although rats are likely to try everything. To conclude, it is easy to keep rats away from bird food by having a clean garden with elevated feeders.
