Suet is a good high-energy food for birds. In warm weather it softens and spoils more quickly, so put out only what birds will finish in a day or two and remove any that looks soft or mouldy. Flutter Butter® is suitable all year round (the RSPB recommends it as a safe summer food).
Put fat balls in a fat ball feeder and cakes in a suet cake feeder. Suet Grains™ go in a feeder with large ports, and Flutter Butter® goes in a Flutter Butter® Feeder. Don’t put suet on tables, trays or the ground.
Clean your feeders once a week. Tip out old food, wash every part in hot soapy water or a bird-safe disinfectant, then rinse and let it dry before refilling. Weekly cleaning helps stop the spread of trichomonosis, a disease that passes quickly between finches at shared feeders.
