As night falls, owls take to the skies, perfectly adapted for life in the shadows. With their strikingly large eyes, distinctive facial discs and near-silent flight, these nocturnal birds effortlessly navigate and rule the dark. From countryside barns to dense woodlands, five resident species can be spotted across the UK.
Barn owl
With its heart-shaped white face, ghost-like appearance and pale plumage, the barn owl is a familiar sight across British farmland. They are often seen gliding low over grassy fields and rough pastures at dusk in search of small mammals like voles and field mice.

Tawny owl
Famous for the classic 'twit-twoo' call - which is actually a duet between a female's sharp 'ke-wick' and a male's wavering trill - the tawny owl is the UK's most common and widespread owl species. Preferring broadleaf woodlands, parks and suburban gardens, this stocky, mottled-brown bird relies on exceptional nocturnal vision and acute hearing. They hunt from high perches, preying on small rodents, birds, frogs, invertebrates and occasionally fish.

Short-eared owl
Unlike most of its relatives, the short-eared owl is frequently active during the day, especially around late afternoon. Recognisable by its piercing yellow eyes and long wings, it favours open country such as moorlands, coastal marshes and rough grasslands. Their primary prey is small mammals, with field voles forming the bulk of their diet.

Long-eared owl
Elusive and masterfully camouflaged, the long-eared owl is named for its prominent head tufts. Despite their appearance, these 'ears' are merely decorative feathers raised when alarmed, with its true ears hidden beneath its facial plumage. Inhabiting dense coniferous woodlands and shelterbelts, it remains one of the most challenging species to spot in the wild.

Little owl
Introduced to the UK in the 19th century, the little owl is Britain's smallest owl species. Often seen perched openly on fence posts, telegraph poles or stone walls during daylight hours, it has a distinctive bobbing motion when curious or alert and feeds heavily on beetles, earthworms, and small rodents.
