Why are gardens quiet in September?

Gardens go quiet in September. Birds lie low  to moult into fresh autumn feathers whilst taking advantage of an abundance of berries and seeds in the countryside. This means fewer visits to garden feeders. Yet even when they are keeping out of sight, birds still need our support to push through this demanding season.

How you can help this September

  • Keep fresh water topped up: Feather growth is thirsty, energy-intensive work. Provide clean, shallow water dishes near plant cover so birds can drink and bathe safely without risking exposure to predators.

  • Offer high-protein foods: Rebuilding full plumage requires vital nutrients. Supplying mealworms, Suet Grains™ and other high-energy foods give them the concentrated calories and protein needed to prepare for the colder months.

  • Hold back on heavy pruning: Hold off on trimming back dense shrubs, climbers and hedges. Maintaining thick foliage gives moulting birds the essential shelter they need to stay hidden while vulnerable.

  • Don't forget your nighttime visitors: Birds aren't the only ones preparing for autumn. Keep putting out clean water and suitable food for hedgehogs, foxes and badgers as they work hard to build up vital energy reserves before winter sets in.
