Your questions answered

Goldfinches love niger seed, and siskins and redpolls take it too. Its tiny, oil-rich seeds are high in energy.

Niger seed is very fine, so it needs small ports that let birds take a seed at a time without it pouring out. Every feeder on this page is made for niger.

Feed seed from 1 November to 30 April. Keep the feeder topped up through that period so goldfinches keep coming back.

Fill the feeder only part-way so it’s eaten within a few days, and throw away any seed that clumps or goes mouldy after rain. Clean your feeders once a week. Tip out old food, wash every part in hot soapy water or a bird-safe disinfectant, then rinse and let it dry before refilling. Weekly cleaning helps stop the spread of trichomonosis, a disease that passes quickly between finches at shared feeders.

It’s a pre-filled niger feeder that’s an easy way to find out whether goldfinches are in your area. Hang it up and wait for them to find it.
