Solitary bees, ladybirds, lacewings and other small insects use the tubes and gaps to shelter, lay eggs and overwinter. The Insect Block, Insect House and Insect Loft all give them a safe, dry hiding place.

Fix it in a sunny, sheltered spot about a metre or more off the ground, facing south or south-east, out of the prevailing wind and rain. Somewhere close to flowering plants gives visiting insects food nearby.

Early spring is ideal, before solitary bees start looking for nest sites, but any time of year is fine. Many insects look for places to hibernate in autumn.

No. The all-timber construction weathers naturally. Don’t paint, varnish or spray it, because chemicals can harm the insects that move in.

Leave occupied tubes alone while insects are developing inside. If a section looks mouldy or has been empty for over a year, clean it out in late summer, after the year’s young insects have emerged.
